The FEAR of the Lord

Dictionary.com defines ‘fear’ as a noun and:

  1. a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid. Phobia, concern or anxiety.

Synonyms: foreboding, apprehension, consternation, dismay, dread, terror, fright, panic, horror, trepidation, qualm.

Antonyms: courage, security, calm, intrepidity.

  
 

 



2. reverential awe, especially toward God: the fear of God. awe, respect, reverence, veneration. (Veneration: a feeling or expression of awe or reverence.)

 
There are several Hebrew words for fear:

#1- paḥad- a (noun m) sudden alarm (properly the object feared, by implication the feeling) :- dread (-ful), fear, (thing) great [fear, -ly feared], terror.
 
#2-ʿāraṣ- (verb) to awe or to dread; hence to harass :- be affrighted (afraid, dread, feared, terrified), break, dread, fear, oppress, prevail, shake terribly.

#3-yirʾâ- (noun femenine form of yare'); fear; moral reverence :- × dreadful, × exceedingly, fear (-fulness).

#4 yārēʾ-(verb) to fear; moral to revere; causative to frighten :- affright, be (make) afraid, dread (-ful), (put in) fear (-ful, -fully, -ing), (be had in) reverence (-end), × see, terrible (act, -ness, thing).

Genesis 20:11 Abraham replied, “I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’

Exodus 1:17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.

Exodus 18:21 But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.

Exodus 20:20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”

Deuteronomy 6:2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.

Deuteronomy 10:12 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
Deuteronomy 11:25 No man will be able to stand against you. The LORD your God, as he promised you, will put the terror and fear of you on the whole land, wherever you go.

1 Chronicles 16:25 For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.

2 Chronicles 20:29 The fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard how the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel.

Job 21:9 Their homes are safe and free from fear; the rod of God is not upon them.

Job 31:23 For I dreaded destruction from God, and for fear of his splendor I could not do such things.

Psalm 40:3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.

Psalm 64:9 All mankind will fear; they will proclaim the works of God and ponder what he has done.

Psalm 67:7 God will bless us, and all the ends of the earth will fear him.

Psalm 89:7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him.

Proverbs 2:5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.

Isaiah 41:13 For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

#3 emphobos (adjective)

2 Corinthians 5:11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.

1 Peter 2:17 Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.

Revelation 14:7 He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

Thoughts and reflections:

Do I put man’s thoughts of me over God’s thoughts of me?

Do I respect man-made laws over God-made laws?

Do I fear losing earthly relationships more than losing God’s presence?

Do I try to please others?

Do I actively seek ways to obey or please God?

When making an important decision do I first consider what  God’s Word says?

Is the power, anointing, or blessings of God obvious in my life?

What would I call awesome?

How would I define reverence?

How would I define respect?

What am I afraid of?

What thoughts, attitudes, or people hold power over me?

What am I devoted to?

What causes me to panic?

Do I have any phobias?

What do I dread?

Who can intimidate me?

Verses to combat fear:

Deuteronomy 1:29 Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them.

Deuteronomy 3:22 Do not be afraid of them; the LORD your God himself will fight for you.”

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

1 Samuel 15:24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I violated the LORD’s command and your instructions. I was afraid of the people and so I gave in to them.

1 Chronicles 21:30 But David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
